A KC-30A was refueling a Portuguese F-16 when the refueling boom detached. This incident is now under investigation and the Spanish Government has pulled the Tanker's Military Certificate. So much for a proven system that has neve been in operation service.

Listening to the DoD explain that Boeing was a clear winner, I realized the acquire team finally had a dose of reality in the decision process. Today's economy coupled with an administration that wants to cut DoD spending, the EADS bigger offer of a Multi-role Tanker Transport is not worth the extra billions of fuel and infrastructure costs. The USAF has over 1000 cargo transports and does not need the cargo lift capabilities of the EADS offer. Most KC-135 missions rarely carry a full load of fuel. It makes good economic sense to buy the Boeing KC-46A which will shave billions of dollars over the next 40 years and make follow on contracts more feasible.

High risk concept airplane? What are these EADS people smoking? Did any of these spokesmen ever attend high school? Let alone college? For your information EADS, the Boeing 767 airframe has been around for over two decades. how does the A-330 compare? Also, 767 tankers are already flying. how different will the new USAF version be? Finally 60 years of refuel tanker experience has got to be worth something. How many years does EADS have? You want to talk about high risk? Lokk in the mirror. The fact that the KC-135 has served the U.S. military for over 50 years speaks volumes about Boeing's ability to deliver. EADS better work on truth before anything else.
